William J. Niemy, formerly of Pennsburg, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 in his home in Lake Park, FL after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family. Bill was 77 years old.
He was born in West Rockhill, Pennsylvania on March 6, 1938. He was the first child of the late Olga Pauline (Bobinski) Niemy and John Niemy.
Bill grew up on the family farm in Pennsburg, PA. He played football for four years in high school and faithfully attended every high school reunion. He married the former Judith Carol Baker in 1959 and had 3 children. They divorced in 1970.
He is survived by his three children, Michele Mattea, William Niemy and wife, Leonora, Shawn Shermer and husband John Shermer, and 4 grandchildren. He is also survived by his Uncle Raymond Niemy, siblings John and wife Pat, George and wife Gail, Natalie Settelen and husband Joseph, and Theresa Morgan, and eleven nieces and nephews.
He worked in the semiconductor field for 24 years as a Senior Materials Process Engineer. This work included a Patent for Vapor Phase Si growth over dielectric isolation while at Honeywell, Inc. He was at the forefront of his field and created other innovations in the crystal-growing field of semiconductors. His work included setting up a crystal growing factory in Bucharest, Romania.
In retirement, he purchased a farm in Kentucky and opened End O’ Lane Farm Floral Specialties for which he designed and created floral decorations from wild grape vines for florists. He won multiple championship ribbons for his grape vine creations which included wreaths, swags, and birdcages. Additionally, he loved fishing and had a passion for gardening.
A graveside service remembering Bill’s life will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Quakertown Road, Pennsburg PA 18073 with the Rev. Robert A. Roncase, Pastor of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington Street, East Greenville, PA 18041.
