Vala Marie Port, 78, formerly of East Greenville and Pottstown, died July 20, 2011 at Berkshire Center in Reading.
Born in Charleston, West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Robert G. and Vala (Wimer) Garton.
She was a Head Secretary for over 20 years before retiring for the Upper Perkiomen School District working at the Red Hill Elementary School, then Marlborough Elementary School. After retiring she worked as a secretary at Perkiomen Valley High School for several years. She also had been a secretary in the Pentagon for several years and was a 1950 graduate of Clarksburg High School in West Virginia.
She was a member of New Goshenhoppen United Church of Christ, East Greenville and she was a member and past President serving multiple terms for the Pennsylvania Secretaries Association.
Surviving are four children, Shirley A., wife of George Christian, IV of Birdsboro; Debra J., wife of Joseph Alessi of Gilbertsville, Paula M., wife of Scott Weller of Barto and James Christopher Heater and wife, Brenda of Vandergrift; a sister, Jean Bryant of Virginia; eight grandchildren, George Christian V, Daniel Christian, Sharon Alessi, Adrianna Katz, Amanda Weller, Jason Weller, Brittney Heater and Ashley Heater and four great grandchildren, Sylvia, Keyra, Gregg and Benjamin.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 25 at the Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington Street, East Greenville with Rev. Dr. Deborah Rahn Clemens officiating. Interment follows in New Goshenhoppen Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
