Shirley Marie (Kline) Moyer, 85 of Pennsburg, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at Pennsburg Manor.
Born in Pennsburg, she was a daughter of the late Charles M. and Anna (Wampole) Kline.
Shirley loved music and dedicated her music abilities to local children for 65 years. She began her music career at the age of 12, when she was hired to play the accordion with the Melody Rangers band. Through the years she has played in various groups such as: The Queens of Swing, The Twilight Trio and the AI Sabo Orchestra. Besides performing in the various bands, Shirley graduated from Pennsburg High School and obtained a teaching degree in Music from the former College of Music in Philadelphia.
Shirley started her teaching career by driving directly to her students’ homes. She was finally able to opened up her own music store in Pennsburg, along with three music instructors whom had joined her for a period of time (Robert Marshman, a local high school band instructor, Lillian Barndt of Allentown and Louise Matthews).
Through the years she taught 312 students, many who have made their music career ranging from locations in Philadelphia, Sullivan County and California. She also formed musical groups (5 Crumbs and A Cracker, Roy & His Rockets, Melody Rascals and the Upper Perkiomen String Band), which performed locally and entertained at parks, carnivals, picnics, minstrel shows, weddings and TV appearances.
In addition to her music store, Shirley also taught at Clemmers’ Music Store in Harleysville and St. Philip Neri School in East Greenville, where she formed the school band. She also composed and transposed her own music. Up until the age of 83 she was still able to transpose music and enjoyed playing the organ. Her motto was, “Don’t be sharp, don’t be flat. Just be natural.” Shirley will be greatly missed and will remain in our hearts forever.
Surviving is a daughter, Maryann E., wife of Douglas L. Clemmer of Green Lane; two grandchildren, Gary Sampayo and Valerie Yoder and two great-grandchildren, Sabrina and Justin Yoder. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a brother, Francis Kline.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington Street, East Greenville, PA with Rev. Dennis Brubacher officiating.
