Robert Lamar Walters, 82, husband of the late Helen M. (Bradley) Bringhurst Walters, of Macungie, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2014 in his home.
Born in Upper Hanover Township, he was the son of the late Stella (Miller) Smith.
He was a 1949 graduate of Pennsburg High School and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy serving as a Radio Man on the USS Rolette in the Mediterranean during the Korean Conflict. He then worked as a machinist at U.S. Gauge in Sellersville until retiring.
He was active for many years with the Boy Scouts of America Valley Forge Council and was the Cubmaster of Pack #3591 and Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster and Committee Member of Troop #591 at St. Philip Neri Church; the Continental District Roundtable Commissioner for the Cub Scouts and an Assistant Scoutmaster for Pennsburg Troop #90. He also was a member of Pennsburg Borough Council, a member and past president of Pennsburg Fire Company and a volunteer for the Veterans for Peace.
Robert will be sadly missed by his seven children, Carol Bringhurst of Macungie, Raymond Bringhurst and wife, Mary of Coopersburg, John Bringhurst and wife, Susan of Pennsburg, Betsy, wife of Philip Kresge of Macungie, Barbara Kline of Allentown, Bob Walters of Macungie and Tom Walters and fiancée, Gerri Brauckmann of East Norriton; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren with a great grandchild due soon. Along with his wife and mother, he is predeceased by a grandson, Karl Underkoffler.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2014 at the Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington Street, East Greenville with Rev. David C. Smith of Jordan United Church of Christ, Allentown officiating. Burial will follow in Christ Union Cemetery, Niantic.
