Mary Estella (Gaugler) Miller, 86, widow of the late Charles H. “Chuck” Miller of Warner School Road, East Greenville, PA passed away peacefully on Friday, March 4, 2011 in her home. She and her husband were married 56 years.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on June 10th she was the daughter of the late Henry Gaugler and Viola (Jamison) Gaugler.
At the age of 9 years she began working in the family owned confectionary store where they sold candy, ice cream, tobacco products and home baked pies that she and her mother prepared in kitchen. Her father made a special kids treat called “water ice” that they sold along with the ice cream products. After graduating from Simon Gratz High School in Philadelphia in 1943 she began her 6 and a half year career with the Presbyterian Board of Pensions in Philadelphia, as a Policy Rating Clerk before she became supervisor of their National Cash Register Business Machine Operator Department. After her marriage to her husband, Chuck, in 1948 she continued working there by commuting daily from East Greenville to Philadelphia by train until the rail service was discontinued to Philadelphia in January 1950. She resumed her working career in August 1952 at the Harleysville Mutual Insurance Company as a policy rating clerk and later became supervisor in their Commercial Lines Underwriting Department until she retired in August 1986. While she was employed at Harleysville Insurance Company she provided many of her less fortunate co-workers with daily transportation for only a minimal fee. After retiring she continued to work part-time as an office clerk in the Lechner and Stauffer Insurance Agency in Pennsburg. She organized a “Get Together” for Harleysville retirees and other former employees. Illness hit the families and it had to be discontinued. From 1974 to 1979 she conducted a Sunday School class for children with mental disabilities that was held in the St. Philip Neri School, East Greenville, PA. This gave the parents of these children a chance to attend their own church service.
She and her husband were members of the former Ebenezer E.C. Church in East Greenville, PA. where she taught children’s Sunday School classes and organized a Junior Church program.
She was an avid believer of Vacation Bible School being a teacher and later a director of the Bible School held at the church. She also was a Bible School teacher at the Christ E.C. Church in Zieglerville, PA for many years.
She and her husband organized the Miller family reunions for a number of years in an effort to keep the family together.
