Mary Irene (McAdam) Camargo, 78, Barto, passed away at home on Tuesday, March 23, surrounded by her children and family. She was the wife of the late William A. Camargo, sharing almost 55 years of marriage.
Born in Gouverneur, New York, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. McAdam and Ercile Irene (Mills) McAdam. Mary was a nurse by profession, but she was so much more - a wife, a mother, a sister, an aunt, a cousin and a friend to so many people who love her. She graduated from Gouverneur High School in 1960 and went on to study nursing at St. Lawrence University. Mary then made the dramatic and life-changing decision to do her nursing residency at New York Presbyterian in New York City. Dramatic because she had never been to New York City, life-changing because it was here that she met the dashing, Latino "prince" that would become her husband, her partner, her very best friend. Mary and Bill married on October 12th, 1964 and were happily married until the day Bill died while holding her hand.
Mary was a loving, strong, smart, joyful, kind and giving person who had a positive impact on many lives — the world has has lost a true beacon. Mary might have left us, but that light is carried forward by all who knew and loved her.
Surviving Mary are her three children William Gabriel Camargo, Susana Irene Pohl and husband Robert James Pohl, and Robert Andrew Camargo; seven grandsons Charles Franklin Camargo, 15, Andrew Raymond Pohl, 13, Michael Edward Pohl, 13, Henry Emmet Camargo, 12, Gabriel Breyer Camargo, 9, James Robert Camargo, 5, and Thomas Andrew Camargo, 3; and also many nieces and nephews. Mary is also survived by 6 siblings Charles McAdam and wife Elaine, Rebecca and husband Thomas Simmons, Robert McAdam and wife Norma, Richard McAdam, Christine Nash, and Floyd McAdam and wife Darlene. Mary was predeceased by her sister Florence, the wife of Roderick Watson, and brother James McAdam.
