Katherine “Nan” (Haller) Engle, 80, of Lakeview Terrace, Pennsburg, PA, a gift from God to her family and friends, died peacefully at home on Sunday, March 14, 2010 after six years of struggle following a hemorrhagic stroke. She was the wife of Wayne E. Engle celebrating 47 years of marriage on August 18, 2009.
Born in Northampton, PA, Nan was a daughter of the late Ernest and Elizabeth (Case) Haller. She attended high school in Northampton and graduated from Wilson College. She then taught Middle School English at Upper Darby and then at Parkland.
She was a member of Palm Schwenkfelder Church and active for 30 years as a Sunday School Teacher, a Vacation Bible School instructor and a leader and member of the church’s bell choirs. She volunteered at the local library and was eventually selected to serve as the Head Librarian for the Upper Perkiomen Valley Branch of the Montgomery County Library system retiring in 1995.
Nan was a devoted wife and mother and will be remembered as a friend to all who was dedicated to the service of others. She tutored students in English and Math at the Marlborough Elementary School. She participated in the annual Crop Walk for 20 years. She assisted at Perkiomen School Library.
Surviving along with her husband are 2 children, Stephen W. Engle and his wife, Lucero Barry of San Francisco, CA and Ruth Elizabeth Engle of Scottsdale, AZ. She was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Haller.
A Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2010 at Palm Schwenkfelder Church, 833 Gravel Pike, Palm, PA, with the Rev. Nicholas L. Pence officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held prior to the service in the church from 10 to 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Palm Schwenkfelder Church, P O Box 66, Palm PA 18070 or to Friends of the Library, c/o Upper Perkiomen Valley Library, 350 Main Street, Red Hill PA 18076.
