John Sprague

October 29, 1926 — June 24, 2020

John B. Sprague, Sr., 93, of Pennsburg, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 at his home. He was the widower of Lottie (Lubin) Sprague, sharing 60 years of marriage before her passing in 2015.

Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Walter S. and Ida E. (Melvin) Sprague.

John was a graduate of Northeast High in Philadelphia and then started a career as a methods engineer. He would do cost estimations for Standard Press Steel. He was also known to be a “jack of all trades.”

John was a 35-year member of the Royal Rangers, where he held many leadership positions and was also a past president of for the former Paradise Manor.

His love for reading, poetry and book collecting, lead him to own and operate his own book store in Pottstown called “John’s Used Books”. He also enjoyed playing chess, and was known to be a chess expert.

Surviving are his two sons, John Sprague and wife, Sharon of Mahanoy City and Daniel Sprague of Pennsburg; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by a daughter Charlotte Sigmund; and a brother, Melvin Sprague.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, July 2, 2020 at Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, 222 Washington St., East Greenville, PA 18041. A burial will follow in Christ Union Cemetery in Barto. Family and friends are invited to a viewing from 11:00 AM – 12:45 PM prior to the service.
