John Matthew Kevin, Jr., 80, of Pennsburg, PA, died suddenly on August 25, 2020. He was born on January 29, 1940, in Philadelphia, PA, son of John M. Kevin, Sr., and Regina L. (neé Wilcox) Kevin. He is survived by his wife of nearly forty-two years, Jane (neé Jacobs); his children: David (Kathy) Harvey, Michael Harvey, Deborah Kevin, and John M. (Mary Jane) Kevin III; six grandchildren: Drew, Katelyn, Cooper, Lance, Jack, and Caroline; and three great-grandchildren: Francis, Samuel, and Adrianne. He had two older sisters, Delores, who predeceased him, and Beatrice (Harold) Graham of Hatfield, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
John retired in 1979 from the U.S. Navy as a chief petty officer after a full career, serving in Vietnam and many posts both domestically and abroad.
Post-retirement, John published a Civil War era novel, dabbled in real estate, and joined a Civil War reenactment regiment called the 150th Bucktail Brigade, participating in many reenactments, his favorite being Gettysburg. He was a long-time member of the North-South Skirmish Association and local shooting clubs, where he demonstrated his expert marksmanship.
John was known for his mischievous antics and the twinkle in his eyes, often indicating he was up to “no good.” Dad jokes and April Fool’s Day were sacred to him! He loved being outdoors, camping and hiking, and shared his love of adventure with his family. Of all his favorite traditions, gathering his family together on Pizzagiving or Christmas Eve was most important to him—decades of photographs remain to prove it.
John will be laid to rest with full military honors at a graveside service at the New Goshenhoppen UCC Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2020. Arrangements are entrusted to Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home, East Greenville.
