James J. Rightley Sr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on March 16, 2025, at the age of 96. Born on September 11, 1928, in Chester, Pennsylvania, James lived a life filled with love, dedication, creativity, and community.
James attended John Bartram High School, where he excelled as a gymnast and received the silver medal in city competition - a testament to his strength, discipline, and determination even at a young age.
He served honorably in the Army. After his military tenure, he began his career as a machinist at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, where his craftsmanship contributed to the nation's defense. His creativity extended beyond work - he had a deep love for carpentry and was known for designing and building custom wooden frames with hinges for hotel church directories, which were distributed across the country. This special project became a family affair, with all his children contributing to the effort.
James was a man of faith and service, deeply involved with St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish and previously with St. Philomena's Church, where he was active in the CYO program. He was also a dedicated member of the Lansdowne Swim Club, where he served as the diving coach and brought laughter to many through his comedy diving at club splash parties.
James and his beloved wife, Joan, shared many cherished moments as avid Round Dancers. Watching them dance was a joy to everyone - their love was so pure, it shone through every graceful step and turn. Their connection was an inspiration to all who knew them.
James is survived by his five children: James Rightley Jr.; Susan Oehlert and husband Glenn; Anne Rightley; Joan Laufer and husband David; Catherine Chappelle and husband David. He was also a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Stephen. James was one of 13 children and outlived all of his siblings.
He lived out his last three years at Sanatoga Ridge Community, where he continued to make friends and share his ever-present sense of humor. Everyone knew Jim - his warmth, wit, and kindness left a lasting impression on all who met him.
James will be remembered for his unwavering kindness, gentle wisdom, creativity, and the joy he brought to those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service.
