Herman Gilbert Weiss lived to the age of 88, and was born on June 8, 1922, to parents Herman Weiss and Susanna A. (Jabs) Weiss of New Hanover Square, PA. When he was a boy, his family moved to Green Lane, PA and became the owners of the Green Lane Hotel, located at the intersection of Routes 29 and 63, adjacent to the Red Men’s Hall. There Herman grew up with his brother, Edward and two sisters, Dolly and Suzanna. He was a graduate of the East Greenville High School Class of 1940. Keenly interested in sports, he later became a player for the local area “Big Six” Football League. He also learned the welding trade and was educated as a First-Class Welder. Herman enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and proudly served two tours of duty in the islands of the Pacific during World War II, in Marine Photographic Squadron 254. For many years he worked on the “high steel” in the building of bridges and other structures in New York and Pennsylvania. Prior to retiring, he participated in the construction of Pennsylvania’s Limerick Nuclear Power Plant. Herman lived most of his life in the Upper Perkiomen Valley, roaming its hills and fields and fishing its creeks. He became a master of the art of dry fly trout fishing, making a life-long study of insect life cycles and hatches, and tying his own trout fishing flies. After retirement, he could be found fishing the catch-and-release waters of the Perkiomen Creek, where he educated many younger fishermen in the art of the cast. Over his lifetime he was a member of several sporting organizations including the Perkiomen Valley Bowmen, Marlborough Twp., PA; Consolidated Sportsmen of the Muncy Creeks, Sullivan County, PA; and the Narraguagus Salmon Association of Cherryfield, Maine.
