Harvey Ernest “Ernie” Bauman, 85, beloved & devoted husband of Helen (Kuncio) Bauman for almost 63 years, of Macungie, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2014 at Lehigh Valley Hospital – Cedar Crest, Allentown, PA after a long period of illness.
Born in Bally, he is a son of the late Florence (Mutter) and Harvey Eddinger Bauman.
He was a 1946 graduate of Central Catholic High School in Allentown then entered the US Army serving as a MP during the Korean War spending part of his duty in Germany.
He worked as the Service Manager for Kehs Brothers Garage in Bally for many years.
He was a lifelong member of Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where one of his proudest duties was serving as a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He also was a chaplain for the Lower Macungie Senior Citizen’s Center.
For a time Ernie enjoyed making and flying model airplanes. He and wife Helen enjoyed extensive travel, touring Hawaii, Germany and Jerusalem, and many popular US locations. He was a member of the Old Time Plow Boys, a local group interested in preserving old time farm equipment.
Ernie will be remembered for his kind and generous temperament and his genuine and heartfelt concern for his fellow men on earth. He also will be remembered for his creative mechanical & engineering genius; in the words of his grandchildren, “Pappy can fix anything.”
He will be sadly missed by his wife; 3 children, Cheryl and husband, Carl Randolph Bock of Durham, NC; Donna and husband, Randy Hensinger of Kempton, PA, Damian and wife, Barbara of Middlesex, NJ; and 7 grandchildren, Rhiannon Ludington and husband, James, Jiselle Heaney and husband, Michael, Hallie Bock, Anthony Bock, Magenta Hensinger, Jade Hensinger, Dylan Bauman and two great grandchildren, Sybil Ludington and Caspar Heaney.
One of 13 children, he is survived by brothers, Richard and wife, Louise of Bally, Frank and wife, Barbara of Bally, Robert and wife, Faye of Bechtelsville, and Roger and wife, Phyllis of Bally; and sisters, Eugenia (Henry) and husband, Louis Sobotor of Palm Bay, FL, Georgina and husband, Donald Schmoyer of Barto, Eleanor and husband, Albert Weinsteiger Sr. of Barto, and Ruth Heydt of New Berlinville; sister-in-law, Leonore Bauman of Boyertown and numerous nieces, nephews and their families. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by brothers, Gerald, Kenneth and Donald; a sister, Justine Rhodes and brother-in-laws, Charles Heydt and Leon Rhodes.
A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, November 5, 2014, at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 610 Pine Street, Bally, PA 19503 with Msgr. Edward J. Coyle officiating. Burial follows in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church prior to the mass.
