Elizabeth “Betty” A. (Smith) Martin, 95, of Green Lane, passed away on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at Lifequest Nursing Center. She was the loving wife of the late Gerhard A. Martin.
She was born on July 28, 1924 in Red Hill to the late Edgar M. and Dorothy M. (Stahley) Smith.
Betty attended Norristown Beauty Academy and then opened her own beauty shop, B-Mar Beauty Salon, and operated it from her home for 35 years.
She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Green Lane and was active in her community. When she was 18, she joined the Green Lane Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and during her many years with the group, she contributed in many ways by sending packages to servicemen, holding various offices, including that of President for more than 15 years, and assisting at fire company functions.
Betty also worked on the election board and served as Green lane’s Judge of Elections for more than 10 years, served as treasurer or secretary of the ambulance service, served on Green Lane Borough Council for more than two terms and was an active member of the Upper Perkiomen Business and Professional Club where she held several offices, including that of President for two years.
Surviving are her son, Michael T. Martin and wife, Amelia Sue of Green Lane; three grandchildren: Michael G. Martin and wife, Ellen Goldstein, Kelly McCracken and husband, Eric, and Beth McAllister and husband, Doug; five great-grandchildren, Joseph, Michael and Nicholas McCracken and Alan and Eric McAllister.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is predeceased by siblings, Doris Brey and Edgar and Robert Smith.
