Barry E. Acker

On Sunday, November 17, 2024, Barry E. Acker, husband of Doreen E. (Bitting), passed away peacefully at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest with his family by his side. He was born on October 10, 1946 in Slatington PA to the late Earl and Louise (Davies) Acker. Barry lived a full and active life.

Barry graduated from Slatington High School in 1964. On September 30, 1964 at the age of 17 he enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed on the USS Bon Homme Richard Aircraft Carrier off the coast of Vietnam. He attended college on the GI Bill and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from The National College of Business in Rapid City, South Dakota. Barry worked in various accounting positions at Mack Truck and later worked at UPS where he retired.

Barry enjoyed good conversation and loved to research and talk about cars, houses, and boats. He was kind and compassionate and helped people recognize their own strengths. Barry loved to shop and taught his grandchildren how to research large purchases to find the best deal. He was a good and honest man who was always eager to help others.

Barry and his wife, Doreen E. (Bitting) Acker, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in August. Their life centered around love, adventure, and family. Barry and Doreen shared interests such as skiing, water sports, traveling and golf. Barry was a great dancer. Together, they always had a good time. The couple enjoyed playing dominos and games with their wonderful friends. He loved his family and embraced his role as stepfather to Doreen's children, Monica and Jeffrey. He was a source of guidance and support to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his step-daughter, Monica Bricker-Haworth (widow of Timothy), four grandchildren Sirena (Ryan) Werst, Alyssa (Tylier) Owens, Garrett Haworth, and Christopher (Sarah) Davidson and six great-grandchildren Arthur and Sylvia Werst, Iris Owens, Kara, Felix and Oscar Davidson. He is predeceased by his step-son, Jeffrey R. Bricker.

Funeral services to honor Barry will be held at 11:30 AM on December 2, 2024 at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 81 N. Main Street, Pennsburg PA with the Rev. Serena Sellers, Pastor of the church officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery at St. Mark's Lutheran Cemetery, Pennsburg PA. A visitation with the family will begin at 10 AM at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Mann-Slonaker Funeral Home.
