Alphonsus Schertel, 92, of Barto, passed away on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at his home.
Born in Barto, he was a son of the late George and Marie (Henry) Schertel.
Alphonsus was a proud veteran of the US Army serving in 10th Mountain Division in the European Theatre during World War II.
He worked as a Gum Dip Mixer and Tire Manufacturer at the former Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in Pottstown till its closing. He also had driven a milk truck and was a farmer and welder.
He was a lifelong member of Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and in his latter years enjoyed spending time with his niece’s grandchildren, his great nieces and nephews.
Surviving are a brother, Mark Schertel of New Tripoli and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by siblings, Andrew, Joseph and Margaret Schertel and Florence Giangiacomo.
A funeral mass will be held at 12 noon on Friday, February 13, 2015 at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 610 Pine Street, Bally. Burial follows in the church cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a viewing from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the church prior to the mass.
