As a member of Torpedo Squadron Eight, Robert N. Jones received a Presidential Unit Citation "for extremely heroic and courageous performance in combat" during the air battle of Midway, June 4, 1942. He was 18 years old.

After completing training as an aircraft machinists mate, Robert N. Jones shipped out on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet which was immediately employed to carry the Doolittle raiders to attack Japan. He was 18 years old.
